Clear, mesh backpacks hard to find amid new policy at OKC schools

As summer break ends and school begins, families are double-checking shopping lists to make sure their kids are ready for the year.

Most middle schools in the Oklahoma City Public School District are enforcing new backpack rules, with most requiring clear or mesh bag, and some not allowing backpacks at all. KOCO went to six stores in the Oklahoma City area to search for these backpacks.

The search began at the Family Dollar on Martin Luther King Avenue and Northeast 23rd Street near FD Moon Middle School, one of the schools enforcing the new bag policy. The store had two clear bags left in stock.

Other stores in the area, like Dollar Tree, didn't have any that fit the criteria. Homeland didn't have backpacks at all.

KOCO then headed towards some of the larger stores that are known to have school supplies, but the search didn't result in much.

At Five Below, there is an entire wall dedicated to backpacks. However, none of these bags were clear or mesh.

Stores like Target were pretty much bare, with only two clear bags left at one location.

But at one store, KOCO struck gold.

The Belle Isle Walmart has a large selection of mesh backpacks, making it the only store in the area that had options just one week before schools open their doors.

OKCPS will have backpacks for sale at school for students who need them. They will also have their Back-to-School Bash on Saturday with school supplies and backpacks on hand from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Frederick Douglass High School.
